'Thor 2' Pushes Disney to All-Time Record at Global Box Office

As of Tuesday, Walt Disney Studios has broken its previous global box-office record of $3.791 billion, set in 2010.The studio surpassed its previously held record with the help of strong returns from Marvel's Thor: The Dark World. The film opened No. 1 at the domestic box office last weekend, taking in $85.7 million, and has earned $348.5 million worldwide since beginning its international rollout Oct. 30.

Other 2013 films that have helped bolster the studio's box-office strength are Marvel's Iron Man 3, which opened domestically May 3 and has amassed over $1.21 billion to become the year’s top-grossing film; Disney and Pixar's Monsters University, which opened June 21 and has earned over $744 million to become the year's fourth-highest-grossing film; and Oz the Great and Powerful, which opened March 8 and has earned north of $493 million worldwide.

Disney is releasing three more films this year: DreamWorks' Delivery Man (Nov. 22), the animated picFrozen (Nov. 27) and Saving Mr. Banks (Dec. 13 limited; Dec. 20 wide).

Earlier in November, Disney surpassed its previous all-time international box-office record of $2.302 billion, also set in 2010.
