Wayne Rooney targets Manchester United top spot by new year

Man of the match in Sunday's win over Arsenal, Rooney wants United to be in the mixer for a title tilt by 2014

Happy Roo Year: Wayne and United are hoping to reach the summit by Hogmanay

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney wants the club to be top by January 1 as the Red Devils look to revive their title challenge.
The champions began Sunday's monster clash with Arsenal already eight points adrift of the leaders, but a Robin van Persie header secured them victory and cut the Gunners' cushion in a game where United had to avoid defeat:
"We couldn’t afford to lose because we couldn’t let them get 11 points ahead of us.
"It’s a massive lift and it’s a great weekend ahead of the international break. Our aim is to be top or thereabouts at the new year.
"We had to win at all costs. We are right back in it now and the other results gave us a big boost."
Van Persie's first-half goal was enough to sneak past the Dutchman's former club, and it was a rewarding one for the hosts who had paid special attention to set pieces in the week.
"We worked on free-kicks and corners because Arsenal have a few smaller players. Thankfully it paid off."
